Christmas Countdown #13 = Cookie decorating

Girl Scouts = Cookies, right?

Tonight that was certainly the case.  My co-leader Bethany brought sugar cookies and colored sugar and royal icing and we had a cookie-decorating fest at our Girl Scout meeting tonight.

I have never used this kind of icing before.  You have “dam” icing which is thicker; you use it to pipe a border around your cookie or a specific area that you want to make a specific color.

Then you use the “fill” icing to fill in the border.  You kind of squirt the icing in, and then use a toothpick to spread it right up to the piped-on border.  That “stained glass” cookie below took a whole lot of toothpick-spreading.

You can pipe some extra icing on top of your filled-in color to decorate the cookies.  You can make super-cool designs by pulling the point of your toothpick through the colors to make fabulous marbling, swirls, and stars.

You can also use the “dam” icing to pipe designs onto your cookies as we did with a couple of these snowflakes:

Have you ever used this type of icing before?  I must say, I need to learn how to make it, because I think it will be very popular around my house.  (Cookie-baking is a frequent activity when Quinland has friends over.)

Daily Check-In:

  • I’m grateful! for my fabulous co-leaders, Bethany and Melissa.  It has really been a blessing to get to know them.
  • I’m lighter! (or am I?) I had an interesting email conversation with my friend Whitney today.  She said I inspired her to declutter 13 boxes (!) of stuff, and I realized I’d kind of gotten out of the habit of truly decluttering since I have been doing this Christmas Countdown.  I don’t regret it, because it has been a neat way to document family traditions and to make time to do holiday things with Quinland, but I really want and need to keep releasing stuff.  I am swamped with stuff and – especially in my home office – I am getting overwhelmed by the enormity of the task before me.  But I CAN DO IT!  Just gotta get back in the swing of things.
